Barcelona's Lionel Messi has agreed to remain on at a lower salary.

The news is contingent on player departures, which will allow Barcelona to pay the Argentina captain's salary. After his contract, which allegedly earned him £123 million per season, terminated on June 30, Messi, 34, became a free agent. He's on vacation after winning the Copa America, and the contract's finer elements have still to be worked out.
The deal will include a break provision that will allow Messi to depart the club after two years. For a variety of reasons, including La Liga's need that the club unload some salary before new players are registered and the player's own vacation, the announcement might still be a fortnight away.
